In addition to these aims, we have built in opportunities for students to:

● Develop mathematical fluency – Through mathematics lessons and specifically
designed theoretical and practical activities, students are given the opportunity to
develop fluency in performing key mathematical skills, so they become second nature.

● Reason Mathematically – Students are given opportunities to think logically and
flexibly to develop sound mathematical arguments and reasoning.

● Solve complex problems – Students’ ability to solve mathematical problems is
nurtured during lessons through exposure to a variety of strategies and modelling of
good practice.

At the end of their mathematical education in this school, we expect our students to:

● Perform basic numeracy skills fluently.

● Perform basic mathematical skills needed in his/her chosen career or for entry to
higher or further mathematical education.

Autumn
Unit 1: Analysing and displaying data – Find and compare the averages of mode, median, mean and range for a set of data. Find information from tables and diagrams and display in tally charts, different types of bar charts and line graphs.

Interpret and analyse simple charts for grouped data.

Unit 2: Number skills – Mental maths, BIDMAS. Four operations of number. Rounding and estimating. Calculate with money, interpret and use calculator to solve problems with money and time. Order positive and negative numbers and use the four operations.

Find factors, primes HCF and LCM. Recognise and use square numbers.

Unit 3: Expressions, functions and formulae – Function machines. Simplify linear expressions, multiplying and dividing terms, including brackets. Form expressions, write and substitute into formulae.

Unit 4: Decimals and measures – Measure and draw accurately. Order and round decimals to make estimations. Working with decimals mentally. Length, mass and capacity. Convert between different units of measures.

Read scales. Use the four operations with decimals. Calculate area and perimeter.

Spring
Unit 5: Fractions and percentages – Use fraction notation, compare, order, simplify, write equivalent and convert fractions. Add and subtract fractions, find fractions of a quantity. Write equivalent FDP. Calculate with percentages of amounts

Unit 6: Probability – Use relevant words and the scale of 0-1. Identify and calculate probabilities. Find the probability of an event not happening.
Record and use a simple experiment and estimate expected outcomes. Experimental probability and expected outcomes.

Unit 7: Ratio and proportion – Use and solve direct proportion questions. Use the unitary method. Use ratio notation, reducing to simplest form. Find equivalent ratios and divide an amount by a ratio.
Use ratios and measures.

Use fractions and percentages to describe and compare proportions. Understand the relationship between fractions, percentages and proportion.

Unit 8: Lines and angles – Use a protractor to draw and measure angles. Recognise different types of angles. Estimate angles. Draw triangles accurately. Calculate the size of missing angles

Unit 9: Sequences and graphs – Recognise, describe and continue a sequence and pattern. Generate a sequence and plot co-ordinates from a rule. Find the midpoint of a line. Recognise different types of sequence. Draw a straight line graph. Find the nth term of a linear sequence.

Unit 10: Transformations – Identify congruent shapes. Enlarge shapes and find the scale factor. Recognise reflectional and rotational symmetry. Identify symmetry in 2D and 3D shapes. Reflect a shape in a mirror line. Describe and carry out rotations. Translate 2D shapes. Transform 2D shapes by a combination of rotation, reflection and translation.

Unit 2: Area and volume – Area of a triangle, compound shapes, parallelogram and trapezium. Volume and surface area of cubes and cuboids including mixed units. Nets and drawing on isometric paper. Plans and elevations.

Unit 3: Statistics, graphs and charts – Draw and interpret pie charts, stem and leaf diagrams and scatter graphs. Use a frequency table and two way table. Compare data through averages and range. Recognise misleading graphs.

Unit 4: Expressions and equations – Simplify algebraic powers. Expand brackets. Form an expression. Factorise equations. Solve One-step and Two-step equations.

Unit 5: Real-life graphs – Draw and use a conversion graph, distance-time graph and line graph. Curved graphs and their properties. Draw and interpret real life graphs from a range of sources.

Unit 6: Decimals and ratio – Round to decimals places and significant figures. Order numbers, positive and negative. Place value calculations, calculate with decimals. Apply decimals to ratio and proportion. Write unit ratios.

Unit 7: Lines and angles – Classify quadrilaterals by their properties. Identify alternate and corresponding angles. Calculate angles in and made by parallel lines.

Interior and exterior angles of regular polygons. Solve problems involving angles by setting up equations.

Summer
Unit 8: Calculating with fractions – Order fractions. Apply the 4 operations. Convert between mixed and improper fractions.

Unit 9: Straight-line graphs – Plot graphs and calculate the gradient of a straight line. Plot and identify equation of a straight line. Direct proportion on graphs.

Unit 10: Percentages, decimals and fractions – Recall FDP equivalence. Recognise recurring and terminating decimals. Order fractions. Write one number as a percentage of another and applying percentage change.

Unit 5: Equations – Solve linear equations inc. with brackets, solving equations with unknowns on both sides.
Unit 5: Inequalities – Draw inequalities on a number line, solve linear inequalities, substitute values into formula, and rearrange equations.
Unit 5: Sequences – Term to term & position to term rules, nth term, and pictorial representations of sequences.

Unit 6: Angles – Angle notation, 8 basic angle rules inc. parallel lines, properties of quadrilaterals, interior and exterior angles of polygons.

Unit 7: Averages and Range – Sampling, three averages and range, inc. grouped data, finding averages and range from stem and leaf, use statistics to describe a population.

Unit 8: Perimeter, Area & Volume 1 – Perimeter & area of 2D shapes, area of compound shapes, surface area of 3D prisms, volume of 3D solids use standard units for mass, length, area, volume and density, change between related standard units.

Unit 3: Interpreting & representing Data (including for grouped data) – Two way tables, pie charts, line graphs for time series, stem and leaf diagrams, frequency diagrams, frequency polygons, averages and range (inc. grouped data), scatter graphs.

Unit 4: Fractions, Ratio & Percentages – All four operations with fractions, converting between FDP, recurring decimals, one quantity as a fraction of another, ratio notation, simplest form (inc. 1:n), divide into ratio, compare ratios, fractions in ratio problems and vice versa, converting currencies & measures, direct proportion, % increase & decrease, one quantity as a % of another, reverse %.

Unit 5: Angles & Trigonometry – Angle notation, 8 basic angle rules – (including parallel lines), properties of quadrilaterals.
Unit 5: Angles & Trigonometry – Interior and exterior angles in polygons. Pythagoras theorem, basic trigonometry for sides and angles in right angled triangles (SOH CAH TOA)

Unit 6: Graphs – Finding the gradient and y intercept (y=mx+c), parallel and perpendicular lines, plot and interpret linear, quadratic and cubic graphs.

Unit 7 Area & Volume – Properties of 2D & 3D shapes, units of measure, area, surface area & volume – including composite shapes, circles, spheres, cones, arcs and sectors.

Unit 8: Transformations & Constructions- Plans & elevations, draw accurate constructions such as: perpendicular bisector & angular bisector, draw SAS, ASA, RHS & SSS triangles, solve problems using loci, scale drawings, three figure bearings, Identify, describe and draw translations, reflections, rotations and enlargements (inc. fractional scale factors ½ ), combine transformations.

Unit 15: Constructions, Loci & Bearings – Plans & elevations, draw accurate constructions such as: perpendicular bisector & angular bisector, draw SAS, ASA, RHS & SSS triangles, solve problems using loci, scale drawings, three figure bearings.

Unit 16: Quadratic Equations & Graphs – Multiply out double brackets, factorise quadratics, inc. the difference of 2 squares.
Unit 16: Quadratic Equations & Graphs – Factorise quadratics, Solve quadratic equations by factorising, show algebraic expressions are equal, plot quadratic graphs, identify roots, intercepts & turning points.

Unit 17: Perimeter, Area & Volume 2 – Identify circle properties, area and perimeter of 2D shapes inc. circles semi circles, sectors and compound shapes, surface area & volume of 3D shapes inc. cylinders, pyramids, cones and spheres, volume of composite solids.
