Clubs and Activities

All students are encouraged to take advantage of the many extra-curricular activities on offer. There is a wide range of social, academic and sporting activities before school, at lunchtimes and after school.

Clubs range from Sculpture Club, Cricket, Football, Debate, DT Club, Drama Club, to STEM activities, Swimming and Table Tennis, with many more. There is also the opportunity to join the Royal Marines Combined Cadet Force.

Students at Ernest Bevin Academy regularly comment on how much they enjoy the extra-curricular offer.

Combined Cadet Force

Combined Cadet Force (CCF)

The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is a voluntary youth organisation in schools and colleges, in both the state and independent sector, sponsored and administered by the Ministry of Defence.

At Ernest Bevin Academy we are very fortunate to work with the Royal Marines, being one of only three schools in London to have a Royal Marines CCF section. The Ernest Bevin Contingent was launched in 2016 and officially opened at our first parade on 19th April 2017 as part of the Government’s Cadet Expansion Programme (CEP).

As student progress up through the CCF, they often earn promotions and end up leading training. Student really are expected to take a lead in the running of the cadets.

At the Pringle Competition at Commando Training Centre in Lympstone in March 2022, Ernest Bevin Academy became the first state school in the 40 year history of the competition to win a trophy: The Urban CQB Military Skill Trophy.

If you are interested in finding out more see the School Staff Instructor, Mr Riches, who is in college on a Tuesday.

What is the CCF?

The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is a voluntary youth organisation based in schools and colleges. It is sponsored and administered by the Ministry of Defence. CCF units, known as contingents, may comprise up to 4 sections: Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Army and Royal Air Force. The MOD sponsors the CCF and provides some financial aid, administered by the respective service – which in our case is the Royal Navy.

Mission

The CCF mission is to:

“Provide a disciplined organisation in a school so that pupils may develop powers of leadership by means of training to promote the qualities of responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and perseverance.”

Who is it for?

At EBA the CCF is open to students in Years 9-13. Students in Years 8 and 9 can apply to join in the summer term each year.

What types of activities can I get involved in?

The focus is on developing confidence, team working and leadership skills. Activities include map reading, fieldcraft, navigation, fitness, first aid, camping and military knowledge.

How will it benefit me?

The skills developed in the CCF are very transferable both to the worlds of work and university. The most significant skills we look to develop are those of leadership, team work and communication. You can add your CCF experience to your CV and/or UCAS personal statement.

How do I join?

Year 8 and 9 students are invited to apply in May each year. If you want to join, you should:

  • Collect an application form from Mr Riches.
  • Complete the application and get it signed by your parent/carer giving you permission to take part in the application process.
  • Hand the application form to the Reception desk.

You will then be invited to join the selection phase which normally lasts 4-5 weeks. During the selection phase, you must attend each week after college on a Tuesday. If you are successful, you will be accepted into the next wave of training. Good luck and get those applications filled in!

Trips

At Ernest Bevin Academy we encourage students to take part in trips and school journeys. These range from trips to the local library to skiing trips, trips to the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Switzerland and even to China.
