Review

The primary way we judge the impact of our careers programme is through our destinations data. In 2018 we had two year 13 leavers at risk of NEET; in 2019 it was three. For the last eight years over one hundred students have left year 13 for university. The number of year 13 leavers going on to apprenticeships has grown from under ten in 2017 to over thirty in 2019.

Careers curriculum

  • A structured programme of timetabled careers lessons for all year groups
  • Face to face, independent & impartial careers guidance from external professionals (1 day a week)
  • Collaborating with teachers in charge of Work Related Learning, PSHEE and Citizenship
  • Close Liaison with the Head of SEN to support SEN students appropriately
  • Utilising online resources and mentoring/work experience opportunities including Pure Potential, Access Professions le PLOTR
  • Encouraging students to utilise Sutton Trust residential courses, UNIQ, University of London Taster Courses, widening participation programmes at LSE, Kings College London, UCL and St George’s, University of London amongst others
  • Parents/Carers Information Evenings to enable transition at 13+ le 16+
  • Close liaison with Heads of Year 11, 12 &13 to manage those potential NEET students and provide structured support to minimise/eliminate this possibility.

In Year 9 there is an options evenings in January where the optional courses are outlined to boys and their parents to ensure all students can make an informed decision about the appropriate courses to follow in Key Stage 4.

In Years 10 & 11 Careers Lessons focus on skills such as writing your CV, interview techniques and writing letters of application. Opportunities for enrichment and volunteering are offered through various school trips and enrichment activities including the Combined Cadet Force.

selemo 10 students undertake a 1-week Work Experience placement after October half term and employers are vetted for Health & Safety by the Wandsworth Education Business Partnership (BEST). This is a centralised agency for all schools in Wandsworth who also help find many placements. Students may make their own arrangements with employers.

selemo 11 are invited to a Sixth Form information evening and encouraged to try taster sessions for Sixth Form courses. They will meet with a senior member of staff to discuss their future plans. The majority 75-80% of Year 11 students stay on at Ernest Bevin for Sixth Form.

In the Sixth Form, all students have a timetabled Careers lesson every week which covers UCAS – the university application process, student finance, gap years and apprenticeships. Help in completing Personal Statements and application forms is available on a one to one basis.
