Welcome to Ernest Bevin College’s website which I hope you will find interesting and informative. Our values of Opportunity, Happiness, Respect, Tolerance and Resilience are at the heart of all that we believe in at Ernest Bevin College. The ethos of the college is one of high expectations of behaviour and learning in conjunction with a warm, friendly and supportive environment. We are inclusive and are proud to have a community of students of all backgrounds, prior attainment and needs. We aim to ensure that we are able to deliver an education so that each individual is able to fulfil their potential.
We are a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths specialist college and introduced a STEM Stream to Year 7 in September 2019. We are a Computer Science Hub which reflects our developments in Computer Science. Each year over 75% of our 6th Form students go to university with the majority choosing to read STEM subjects. We also have students embarking on successful apprenticeships
I have been Principal at Ernest Bevin College since 2006, having joined the college in September 2001 as Vice Principal. I am supported by a well-qualified, stable and committed staff who have high expectations of themselves and their students and they work very hard to meet individual needs. We look after our staff by providing support and training and a good working environment. The college has a track record of succession planning and staff have many opportunities for internal promotion which is reflected in the low staff turnover and the staff commitment and loyalty to the institution and students.
We have recently regained the recognised International Status Award and are proud to be multi-cultural and multi-faith school with nearly 60 home languages spoken in our community. We are the only College in London to have a Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Unit on site with over 60 cadets from Year 10 – 13 who work with the Royal Marines. We have strong connections with China as a result of having a Confucius Classroom on site and every year we have a trip to China as part of our extra–curricular programme. Mandarin is taught in Year 7.
The College buildings are of a very high standard, providing excellent facilities in all curriculum areas. We have recently refurbished our Science Laboratories and Food Technology room which reflect our desire for continuous improvements in our learning environment..
The College has a programme of elite sports with successes at local, regional and international level. The sports facilities are of the highest standard and include a large sports hall, a 25 m swimming pool, a dojo and a fitness suite. We work with Greenhouse Sports to provide dedicated sports coaches who train our students to compete at national and international levels in the sports of judo and table tennis. We have a Cricket Academy in partnership with TWENTY20 Community Cricket to enable students to benefit from professional cricket coaching and a full programme of competitive matches alongside their studies. We also host an Athletics Academy to support our elite athletes in the Sixth Form.
I am immensely proud of Ernest Bevin College as a local school for the local community. I am grateful and honoured to be working with a loyal and dedicated staff body and for the continuous opportunities that the school provides for all the College community.
I look forward to meeting you as you visit Ernest Bevin College.
Rukhsana Sheikh, Principal of Ernest Bevin College
