A Level Results August 2020

Students, Parents, Staff and Governors- lend me your ears!

Can I say with heartfelt thanks to all of you – parents, pupils, staff and governors- who persuaded the Department for Education to reverse its decision. ‘Well done to you all’. We got there in the end. . You have been amazing and it reaffirms my belief in the power of a community to recognise that some wrongs must be challenged.

Statement about A Level Results from Ann Keane-Maher, Tonakgolo

So my grateful thanks go out to all of you who have changed the fortunes, fulfilled the dreams and given hope to the future of so many of our children. I was delighted and proud to watch Hudaifa and Divine on Channel 4 news on Monday evening being interviewed by Jon Snow. I was so nervous and they were calm, considered and passionate in their response. They are representative of all of this year’s cohort.

This year group were a stunning, bright and joyous cohort and that is one reason why it would have been invidious for their results to have been determined by their predecessors. I’m sure previous years were also great; Ernest Bevin has a good track record at A Level and Btec, but it would not have been possible for any machine driven algorithm to know this year’s cohort as individuals. Their teachers did and therefore it was their evidence that had the greater validity and fairness.

Even before the Government’s change of heart took place, EBC had seen an improvement in every grade. We are especially proud to have seen the A*-C grade improve by 11% and I know this will now increase further. Hard work on behalf of pupils and teachers has brought about a sharp uplift in results which will continue to benefit future year groups in the school.

Above some of this year’s cohort who’s university places include Law with French at Nottingham University, Computer Science at York University, Biomechanical Engineering at Kings College, London and Sports Therapy at Essex University with a Volleyball Scholarship.

As each of our young people go off on the next stage of their life’s journey I want them to understand that they will be deeply missed and they go forward to carry the name of Ernest Bevin with pride. We are certainly proud of them and we are grateful to all of our parents who entrusted your child to us for such important years in their lives.

Please keep in touch; we really are excited to hear about how you are getting on; come back and see us you will always be welcome.

So many of you are starting exciting journeys, well over 100 off to university to far flung parts of the country and others taking up apprenticeships in prestigious companies. To name just a few:

Joel A* A* A Economics at Durham University

Dhruv A* A A Economics at University College, London

Rayyan A A A Law with French at Nottingham University

Frederick A*A B Computer Science at York University

Jeffrey A* A B Biomechanical Engineering at King’s College,

Zakariya A A B Computer Studies at King’s College, London

Hudaifah A B B Architecture at Portsmouth University

Alongside all of the rest of our wonderful class of 2020 you have achieved at the highest levels in the midst of one of the most terrible periods in recent history and emerged successful. They will write about you in history books and when you’re old you’ll tell your children and grand-children what it was like in the Summer of 2020.

Ann Keane-Maher
